CARLOW Family History
This interesting surname with variant spellings Carlow, Carlo, Carlaw, etc., is a dialectal variant of the locational names Callow in Derbyshire and Hertfordshire, deriving from the old English pre 7th Century "calu" meaning "bere" plus "hlaw" "hill", hence "bare hill", or Calow in Derbyshire, deriving from the old English pre 7th Century "calu" plus "halh" meaning "corner of land", "water meadow". Frowing up I always believed my Carlow ancestors came from Ireland.Doing some research has surprised me as it appears my ancestors were German who came to Canada via the USA in 1751.However, I can find no parents or background on Johann Jacob Carlow, b. 1725 who cam on the ship Priscilla. Any help in clarifying the situation would be most appreciated. I am aware of the Palatinates who came to Ireland in the early 1700's but can find no reference to any Carlows.
