Hendrick Family History
Recorded in Europe in some four hundred surnames spelling forms since the medieval times, this name is a derivative of the pre 7th century German personal name "Heim-ric", meaning "home rule". Compound names of this type, were very popular in the centuries proceeding the introduction of surnames in the 12th century, and this is a good example of the genre. Recorded in such varied spellings as Henrich, Hendrich and Henrick (German), Hendry, Henry and Henryson (English and Scottish), Aimeric, Enric and Henric (French-Provencal), Hendrick, Hendrik, and Hendrickson (Flemish), Jendircke, Gendricke, Jina, and Jindrick (Czech & Slavonic), the Spanish Enriques, and the Hungarian Jendrassik, the name, as a first name, was most popular in England, no less than eight kings being so-called, but as a surname the name is most popular in Northern Europe.
Hendrick Family From Wexford
HENDRICK, Henrick, Handrick and Hanrick are all common variants of this old Gaelic name in Co. Wexford, representing an off-shoot of a branch of the great MacMurrough ruling family of Leinster and Ui Ceinsealaigh, the ancient kingdom which included Co. Wexford.
The Irish form of the name, MacAnnraic, or the Clann Annrag, derives from a Norse personal name, cognate with Henry. Thus the MacHendricks are believed to be descended from a Henry MacMurrough.2
The name is not included in the 1659 census of principal Irish names in Co. Wexford, but it appears many times in its different forms in Griffith's Valuation of 1853. The majority are Hendricks in the barony of Scarawalsh, followed by seven Hanricks and six Henricks in Bantry, five Hanricks in Shelburne, wo Handricks in Scarawalsh, WO Hendricks in Shelburne, wo Hendricks in both Gorey and Shelburne.
The name is best known today through the business family of New Ross. A John Hanrick fought at the Baule of Ross during the 1798 rebellion, and was afterwards at the insurgent camp on Lacken Hill, outside the town. He is said to have lived in a house near Talbot Hall. The story is told that when he left the insurgent camp to check on the safety of his wife and family he ambushed a party of mounted Redcoats approaching his home, killing one of them. He then took his wife and family back to the camp at Lacken.
Three Handricks - Thomas, Michael and Garrell -- were members of the crew of the Fethard-on-Sea lifeboat, Helen Blake, which was wrecked during a rescue mission in February 1914. Thomas (who was bowman) and Michael were amongst the nine lifeboat men who lost their lives, while Garrell was one of the five survivors who spent three days on Keeragh island without shelter, food or water before being taken off.
The Hanrick family of Ballinastraw (Bunclody) have been prominently associated with the return to prominence of Bunclody as a major force in the G.A.A. Pat, Maruin, Dinny, John and Tom have all played hurling and football for their club and Martin is a current member of the County football team.
